This weekend I led the Sunday adult art class at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester. Inspired by the work of Peter Blake participants created sculptural accordion books which, when unfolded, revealed strange and unusual characters.
These tunnel books were a mass-produced Victorian invention, designed for the amusement of small children. Layers of fantastical scenes were pierced with viewing holes to allow the viewer to peer inside.
Peter Blake's work combines painting with collage, often populated by famous personalities including wrestlers, strippers, circus performers, rock-n-roll bands and models. We used found materials (such as magazines comics and postcards) to assemble our own wonderfully bizarre pop-up pop-art books.
