This week in the Painting & Drawing from Scratch course at Richmond Art School we discussed methods of capturing light and shadow on simple forms (spheres, cubes, cones) before progressing onto more complex structures.

The class were challenged to create huge observational drawings of peppers using charcoal and chalk. This exercise stopped students getting overly focused on tiny details and forced them to think big and bold! The resulting monochrome drawings were some of their most dramatic and successful work so far. The beautiful drawing above was created by student Ruth Bennett.
