Van Gogh Reed Pen Drawings

This week on my Painting & Drawing from Scratch course at Richmond Art School we took a closer look at the pen and ink drawings of Vincent Van Gogh.

Van Gogh used reed pens (made from sharpened grass stalks) to create incredibly intricate preparatory sketches. These drawings demonstrated to students how simple mark-making can be used to beautiful effects

We considered how drawing materials can influence and change our artistic style, just as the reed pen helped Van Gogh to develop his characteristic expressive marks. After a brief visit to a duck filled reed bed, we were able to whittle a few pens of our own and have a go at making our own pen and ink reed pictures.
